This post gives a brief run down on the Australian Curriculum
and outlines my opinion on the development and implementation of it in
Australian public schools. I was going to write the outline myself, however
Shannan from The Blog of (the future) Mrs Perrino has done an excellent job! So
I will just focus on why I think that the development and implementation of the
Australian Curriculum is a positive move towards a consistent and unified curriculum
for all young Australians.
Firstly, I have had personal experience of moving
children from one state to another that resulted in problems associated with the
different school starting age and curriculum. These problems are prevented by
having a common curriculum between all Australian states and territories.
Secondly,
all research and resources, including knowledge from those that input in the
design of the curriculum are focused into one Australian curriculum rather than
spread out into all the different curriculum's that were operating; after all,
Australia is not that big and really, does every state and territory need to
have an individual curriculum.
What about the need to have a relevant curriculum
to the local area? I believe that as the content descriptors are very broad,
they allow the individual schools and teachers to teach content that is relevant
and in context to their particular area and students.
In summary, I think that
the development of the Australian Curriculum is a positive move towards providing
quality education to young Australians.
